Gwent:The Witcher Card Game Soon Available To iOS User?

The origin of Gwent

It all began with Andrzej Sapkowski’s ‘The Witcher’ short stories. The card game Gwent featured in the stories was included in the 2015 role-playing game ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ as a unique side quest that required players to collect cards scattered across the game’s fantasy world and build decks.

The mini game’s insane popularity and fans’ consistent demand prompted developers to turn it into a standalone digital collectible card game titled ‘Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’ that was launched for Playstation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows in 2018.

The card game was lauded for its breathtaking artwork and engaging gameplay and quickly developed a cult following. In March 2019, game developers CD Projekt Red announced that a mobile version of the game will be launched for iOS devices by the end of 2019.

Gameplay Basics

‘Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’ is a turn-based multiplayer game. Each game includes three rounds. Each player plays one card on every turn, drawing from a deck that comprises at least 25 cards. Every deck of cards belongs to a different faction and has its own distinct style of play. There are five different factions in all and each faction’s leader possesses unique individual abilities.

The objective of the game is to win two of the three rounds by gaining power (points) through card-play. Each card has a specific power value attached to it. Players vie to attain higher power value with each turn. The player that manages to collect the highest power at the end of the round wins. Having a greater number of cards in the deck is an obvious advantage.

A round ends when the players have either run out of cards or both the players decide to pass on to the next round. Every round win warrants daily rewards for the players. These rewards include card packs called ‘kegs’, ore, meteorite powder, and scraps. Players can choose to purchase additional card packs through microtransactions or the used ore, the in-game currency. In addition, it’s possible to craft kegs using scraps and meteorite powder.

Gwent is poker with a magical twist

Gwent plays out like a fantastical version of poker where strategy is highly important. Calculated moves, including planned losses, can pay big dividends. A player can choose to fold after playing a single powerful card compared to the opponent’s two to gain an advantage in the next round.

One of the game’s biggest strengths lies in its unpredictable nature. The match result is usually up in the air until the last card is played out. In addition, understanding the deck’s strengths and playing in accordance makes the game’s proceedings more ‘decision based’ rather than a consequence of chance.

While it’s a strong competitor to popular collectible card games like ‘Hearthstone’ and ‘Magic: The Gathering’, ‘Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’ stands apart with its unique structure of gameplay. It doesn’t follow the competition’s ‘mana system’ but is instead played across a number of rows that allow for different attacking and defense maneuvers based on which card is played on a particular row.

Gwent’s transition from console to smartphone

The move from consoles to touch screens is always a tough one for game developers. The mobile version needs to remain loyal to the original game’s themes and gameplay while adapting the controls to the touch-based interface of handheld devices. The ‘tap and swipe’ version of Gwent has adapted the full set of features from PC to mobile. It promises gorgeous, insanely detailed fantasy artwork and visuals previously unseen in mobile games. There are a number of new cards, both standard, and premium. The animation effects when a premium card is drawn are also next-level.

‘Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’ will arrive at App Store as a 2.9 GB game along with several purchasable bundles, starter packs and meteorite powder. The game is compatible with devices running on iOS 12 and later upgrades, including iPhone 6s and later models, iPad Air 2 and later models, iPad Mini 4 and later models and iPad 5th generation and all of its later variants.

Everyone that’s been playing the game on PC will be able to carry over their in-game progress, collected cards, and purchases to the iOS version of the game. That’s not all, players will also be able to share their in-game progress and possessions between PC and iPhone or iPad using their GOG account. This feature, however, will not be available to console players (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One).
